THE EDMUND RICE CENTRE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION
THE BROOKLYN PROJECT: YOUNG AUSTRALIANS AND THE NEXT HUNDRED YEARS
April 2 - 6 2008
The Brooklyn Project will bring together 25 young people between the ages of 18 and 30 over five days (Wednesday to Sunday afternoon, April 2-6) to participate in discussions about the history of the way Australia has conceived of itself as a nation, to revisit the way our constitution was written and to discuss ways of making our society more just. It will involve participation of those who were excluded in the drafting process of the first Australian Constitution:
* Indigenous people
* women
* people of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities
* young people.
The aims of the event are to:
* Revisit the process of forming our nation.
* Consider the formation of ourselves as Australians.
* Give a voice to those who were excluded at the time the Constitution
was framed.
* Highlight issues that currently affect these groups.
* Promote understanding and healing.
The event will be moderated by leading community activists and experts, including Patrick Dodson, Olga Havnen, Paul Lane, Marcia Langton, Lowitja O'Donoghue and Phil Glendenning.
We are seeking applications from people aged 18-30 who would like to participate in this event. If you would like to be part of this exciting project, go to www.brooklyn.org.au for further information and an application form.
